Common Abortion FAQs
Did You Know?
- Nearly 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, so a positive test doesn’t always mean you’ll need an abortion.1 Only an ultrasound can confirm a viable pregnancy. We offer free ultrasounds to give you clear, accurate answers.
- The FDA approves the abortion pill only up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.² Getting an ultrasound is the best way to find out how far along you are and if the abortion pill is even an option.
- Relying only on the date of your last period can sometimes lead to an incomplete abortion. A viability ultrasound with a qualified nurse is the most accurate way to date your pregnancy.³
-
Many women who had abortions felt subtle to considerable unwanted pressure to abort. You have the right to choose the outcome of your pregnancy. Not even a partner, boyfriend, spouse, or parent has the legal power to blackmail you, coerce you or force you to have a medical or surgical abortion. If you suspect that you might be pressured to abort or are not supported by the thought of parenting or providing parents, please connect with someone at our center who can advocate for you and share what your legal rights are.
You have the legal right to decide what to do. No one should make this decision for you.
No one can force you to have an abortion, not even your parents or the father of your baby. If you are feeling pressure (also called coercion) from someone to have an abortion, you have options. Request an appointment to speak with a trained client consultant about your options and legal rights. If you are in immediate danger or worry about your safety or the safety of your baby, call 911. -
If you are considering abortion as an option, your first step is a pre-termination appointment to complete your ultrasound.
Before scheduling an abortion, an ultrasound will determine:
Whether or not your pregnancy is progressing. This knowledge is important in determining which method of abortion you would be eligible for. Each type of abortion procedure and costs depends on your personal health history and how far your pregnancy has progressed.
Whether or not your pregnancy is viable. The only way to be 100% sure you have a viable pregnancy (a pregnancy that is progressing) is to have an ultrasound. Studies have shown that up to one in four pregnancies do not progress. Some women don’t know they’ve had a miscarriage until it is seen during an ultrasound. If you have miscarried, you will need to receive follow-up care from a doctor. -
Knowing how much an abortion cost depends on the type of procedure you can have and whether or not the abortion pill is available to take at your pregnancy stage. It can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars.
Before you can move forward with any abortion decision, it’s crucial to know how far your pregnancy has progressed. Your pregnancy progression can be verified with an ultrasound at Northwoods Pregnancy Center. While our center does not perform or make referrals for pregnancy terminations, we offer ultrasounds at no cost.
-
We offer cost-free ultrasounds to determine whether the pregnancy is viable and the stage of fetal development. As a community-funded 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Northwoods Pregnancy Center does not financially benefit from your ultrasound or pregnancy decision. One additional benefit of an ultrasound in our center is that, because there is no charge, none of the procedures done in our center will show up on your insurance or be billed to your account.
Your ultrasound information is 100% confidential. We are here to advocate for you as you evaluate your options in a safe space.
Request a confidential appointment online, or call us. All after-hours requests will be contacted the following day of operations.
Please note that if you are experiencing health issues such as bleeding, spotting, or cramping, you should seek immediate medical attention. These could be symptoms of a spontaneous abortion or miscarriage, and you may require further medical treatment. -
We do not offer or refer for pregnancy terminations or birth control. Only information is provided as an educational service.
