Do I need an Ultrasound?

Yes—getting an ultrasound is a key first step. It helps determine how far along you are in your pregnancy, which directly affects the type of abortion available to you, its safety, and its cost.

An ultrasound also verifies whether the pregnancy is viable (not miscarried or ectopic). To get one at no cost, schedule your free ultrasound appointment here.

Types of Abortion

There are two primary types of abortion: medical and surgical. The right method depends on how many weeks pregnant you are and what’s legal in your state.

  • Surgical Abortion involves a medical procedure to remove the pregnancy.¹ This method is typically done in a clinic and tends to cost more due to required staffing, equipment, and facility fees.

  • Medical Abortion, often referred to as the abortion pill, uses a combination of medications (typically mifepristone and misoprostol) to end a pregnancy.² The FDA has approved this method only up to 70 days (10 weeks) after the start of your last period.

Cost of an Abortion

  • Surgical Abortion: In 2025, the average cost for a surgical abortion ranges from $900 to $2,500.³ Costs can increase depending on how far along you are, whether anesthesia is used, and whether travel is required (especially if abortion laws in your state are restrictive).

  • Abortion Pill: The price for a medical abortion (pill) typically ranges from free to $850, depending on the provider, insurance coverage, and whether it's purchased online. Ordering online may also add costs like expedited shipping or prescription verification.

If abortion access is limited in your area, travel, lodging, and time off work may significantly increase your overall expenses.

Risks of Ordering the Abortion Pill Online

Even if the abortion pill is legal where you live, which it is in Minnesota, ordering it online carries important health risks. Many pills sold through international or unregulated sources may not be FDA-approved and could contain incorrect dosages or harmful ingredients.⁴

Also, taking the abortion pill without a medical-grade pregnancy test can be dangerous. False positives with home tests do occur, and taking abortion medication when not pregnant—or with an ectopic pregnancy—can cause serious complications.⁵

In fact, about 10% to 20% of confirmed pregnancies end in miscarriage naturally.⁶ That means you may not need to go through an abortion at all. An ultrasound can help determine if the pregnancy is progressing normally or has already ended on its own.
